The Art of Udarata Dancing

Introduction

Udarata Dancing, also known as Kandyan Dancing, is the most iconic traditional dance form in Sri Lanka. Originating in the Udarata (Kandy) region, this cultural performance is not only a symbol of Sri Lankan heritage but also a reflection of its religious, spiritual, and artistic values.

🕊️ History and Origins

Kandyan Dance has its roots in rituals performed in ancient temples to appease the gods. It was originally a sacred dance of the Kohomba Kankariya ritual, believed to cure illnesses and bring blessings. Over time, it evolved into a majestic performance art, especially during royal processions.

💃 Types of Kandyan Dances

There are several forms of Udarata dancing, each with its unique rhythm, purpose, and attire:

  1. Ves Dance

    • The most sacred and classical form

    • Performed by male dancers wearing the Ves costume

    • Symbolizes power, purity, and spiritual strength

  2. Naiyandi Dance

    • Used in ceremonial rituals

    • Involves slow, graceful movements and vibrant costumes

  3. Udekki Dance

    • Dancers play a small drum called "Udekki" while performing

    • Requires great skill and coordination

  4. Pantheru Dance

    • Celebrates victories and prosperity

    • Uses a tambourine-like instrument called “Pantheruwa”

🎨 Costumes and Music

The costumes are strikingly colorful and include elaborate headdresses, chest plates, and ankle bells. The drummers play traditional instruments like the Geta Bera (drum) to guide the rhythm, while dancers leap and spin in perfect harmony.

🥁 Music and movement are inseparable in Kandyan Dance — each beat tells a story.

🌟 Cultural Significance

  • Performed during the Esala Perahera in Kandy – one of the grandest Buddhist festivals in Asia

  • Symbol of national pride and cultural identity

  • Passed down through generations via dance schools and temple rituals
