The Ves Dance

Introduction

Among the many forms of Kandyan (Udarata) dancing, the Ves Dance holds a special place as the most sacred and prestigious. It is not just a dance—it's a symbol of spiritual initiation, discipline, and honor in Sri Lanka's cultural tradition.

🌿 What is the Ves Dance?

The Ves Dance is considered the highest form of Udarata dance. It is traditionally performed by male dancers who have completed years of training and a special ritual called the Ves Mangalya—a sacred initiation ceremony that grants the dancer permission to wear the full Ves costume.

👘 The Ves Costume

The Ves costume is ornate and symbolic, consisting of:

  • A tall, decorated headpiece (ves hat)

  • Heavy silver chest ornaments

  • Flowing white sarong

  • Beaded waistbands and anklets

  • Bells on the legs that jingle with each step

⚠️ Important: Only dancers who complete the Ves ceremony can wear the full costume. Others are not allowed to wear the sacred Ves headgear.

🥁 Music and Movement

  • Accompanied by the Geta Bera (traditional Kandyan drum)

  • Movements are sharp, rhythmic, and powerful

  • Dancers perform leaps, spins, and backbends with amazing control

  • Every step is synchronized with the beat of the drum

🎵 The dance reflects themes of protection, divinity, and discipline.

📜 Ves Mangalya – The Sacred Ceremony

The Ves Mangalya is a night-long ritual where the dancer:

  • Performs in front of a Kohomba tree shrine

  • Is blessed by elders and teachers

  • Wears the sacred Ves for the first time

  • Commits to maintaining the purity and honor of the dance

💡 Once a dancer completes this, he is recognized as a true Kandyan dancer.

🌍 Cultural Importance

  • Ves dancing is showcased in major cultural festivals, like the Kandy Esala Perahera

  • It is a national symbol of Sri Lankan identity

  • Taught in traditional dance schools (gurukula) across the country
